Breed Improvement Program

The Maharashtra Livestock Development Board (MLDB) initiated the Breed Improvement program to enhance the genetic quality and productivity of livestock in the state. This program aims to improve the breed characteristics of cattle, buffalo ultimately contributing to the economic empowerment of livestock farmers.

Background

Maharashtra is one of the leading states in India in terms of livestock population. However, the productivity of livestock in the state is relatively low due to factors such as poor breeding practices, inadequate nutrition, and lack of access to quality veterinary services. To address these challenges, the MLDB launched the Breed Improvement program to provide a structured approach to livestock breeding and genetic improvement.

Objective

The primary objectives of the Breed Improvement program are:

  • Genetic Improvement: Enhance the genetic quality of livestock through selective breeding, artificial insemination, and embryo transfer technology.
  • Increased Productivity: Improve the productivity of livestock in terms of milk, meat, and egg production.
  • Better Livelihoods: Enhance the livelihoods of livestock farmers through improved productivity, increased income, and better market access.
  • Conservation of Indigenous Breeds: Conserve and promote indigenous breeds of livestock, which are well adapted to the local climate and management conditions.
